Via the model of a gender reveal, Michael asks viewers to consider the space between colors, genders, religions, and perspectives and offers a unified place of celebration and honor at a most complex time of year. The colored light installation bathes one of the High Line’s majestic Ilex opaca ‘Dan Fenton’ holly trees in hues of pink, blue and the full spectrum in between. “It’s A Tree!” invites people to understand that everyone experiences the holidays differently, but that we have much in common at heart.

Viewers bathed in the tree’s ambient light are enveloped in the experience and invited to participate via self portraiture and social media. #itsatree

"It’s A Tree" is installed on the High Line at 20th St., less than block from Clement C. Moore Square, home of the author of “A Visit From St. Nicholas”, the poem most associated with the modern day celebration of Christmas.

“It’s a Tree!” is presented in support of the Ali Forney Center, the nation’s largest non-profit providing shelter and healthcare services to LGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness in New York City. For resources or to learn more, visit AliForneyCenter.org
